I purchased this set for my 6 yr-old daughter. Putting it together was a bit challenging. A lot of work for no reward. When going from tunnel to wheel the hamster would fall on it's side. It worked well probably once out of every ten tries. My daughter was very disappointed so we returned it.
Surprisingly cute

My son got this for his 5th birthday and I have to admit, it's surprisingly cute. The hamster runs up the ramp, pausing to make a special sound effect, then runs in the wheel. Eventually it works its way out of the wheel and back down the ramp. At first we only had the wheel, which was okay, but it meant we had hamsters running loose all over the house. Then we got the starter set (sold separately) and hooked them together, which is totally great. We spend a ridiculous amount of time watching them run around in loops, up the ramp to the wheel, and back down again.
One of his hamsters (Mr. Squiggles) does great in the wheel, but the other (Patches) tends to fall over more often. And there's trouble when both hamsters try to run on the wheel at once (hamster traffic jam) so we like that the ramp has removable covers for hamster retrieval.
As others have noted, it's easy to take apart, so one bump from a stray foot and it's in pieces. But it's easy to reassemble. |
Frustrating!!

The wheel on ours at least spins, unlike some other unfortunate buyers. HOWEVER, 90% of the time, the hamster tips over when trying to exit the wheel. Then it slowly slides into the tunnel, so you have to open the tunnel to dig it out and turn it back on. We aren't idiots, so we know we put the tunnels and wheel together correctly and we are 'fortunate' (???!!!) enough to have two hamsters and they both do it. And don't even get me started on if you have two hamsters in the same playset! They run into eachother and tip over too! Wish I had done a little research on these toys before buying!
Better than I thought after reading the reviews

I was hesitant to buy after reading all the reviews here. At first, the wheel didn't spin well, but when I pushed it against the support harder, it snapped into place and then it spun freely. As for actually keeping the pets contained, if you place the plastic end caps from INSIDE the rooms, the hamsters can't push them out. Sticking them in from the outside doesn't work well at all. My 8-year-old is the one who figured that out, making me feel not so smart. By the way, I do not recommend the black and white hamster. It's super obnoxious. It makes barnyard animal noises.
Fun accessory

This is a fun addition to our collection. Pets enter through the tube and run on the wheel just like a real hamster. Kids really enjoy it.
